Real time soil tests are no longer science fiction – they are, in reality, just over the horizon.
That was the takeaway message from a presentation given by Dr Sean Mason at the GRDC Grains Research Update in Geraldton, Western Australia last month.
Dr Mason’s research found that infared technology has the potential to provide rapid analysis of soil characteristics and crop nitrogen status in the field.
New sensor technology is coming online every year and the success of real-time testing is reliant on cheap, robust sensors.
However, continued validation and quality control within a laboratory is also important to determine success.
